Data Engineer 2022 (Project-Based)

UMATYA, as a growing startup, faced challenges with unstructured, raw data related to customer, school, and book records. Hundreds of schools submitted purchase requests, tracked inconsistently through Excel sheets. Distribution processes lacked clarity, and operational inefficiencies led to delays.

To address these issues, I digitized existing records and imported them into Google Sheets. I standardized data formats with clear naming conventions and organized information into separate sheets tailored to specific departments. This reduced clutter and improved accessibility while avoiding performance bottlenecks.

Using Google Sheets' advanced features, I created the following tools:

  • Filtering Tool: Allowed users to reorganize and query raw data dynamically, making data exploration more intuitive.
  • Customer Management Tool: Automated customer data tracking and updates, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Distribution Tool: Simplified the order distribution process, eliminating confusion and ensuring timely deliveries.

I incorporated a user-friendly interface with customizable settings, enabling flexibility for different use cases.

I researched automation solutions and chose Google Sheets for its accessibility. Despite having no prior experience with these tools, I quickly learned advanced features, including Apps Script, by utilizing resources like YouTube and Stack Overflow.

Once the tools were functional, I spent an additional week testing the system to ensure reliability. I gathered user feedback, refined the tools, and provided hands-on training to the team.

Long-Term Impact:

  • Operational Efficiency: The automation significantly reduced manual errors and workload, allowing the team to focus on higher-value tasks.
  • Ease of Use: Designed the system to be intuitive, ensuring team members with minimal technical expertise could use it effortlessly.
  • Scalability: The modular structure allowed for easy updates and future expansion.
  • Sustainability: After two months, the system became self-sufficient with minimal intervention required.

Outcome: My work at UMATYA not only addressed immediate operational challenges but also provided a foundation for long-term efficiency. The CEO confirmed that the system remains in active use, continuing to drive value for the company. This experience marked a significant milestone in my journey toward mastering data handling and process automation.
